PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The nonprofit behind AIDS Walk Philly and popular GayBINGO events is shutting down.
AIDS Fund Philly said medical advancements in HIV treatment and prevention have greatly reduced the HIV crisis, so organizers said they can “conclude our work at this time,” effective Dec. 31.
Since launching in 1985, the group has raised more than $18.5 million for those living with HIV in Philadelphia.
The organization said it hopes governments, other nonprofits and private industry will pick up its mission, as thousands of people in Philly living with HIV lack stable housing.
The nonprofit Action Wellness will take over producing GayBINGO nights.
