PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If you worked for Amazon during the height of the pandemic, you may be entitled to some money.
The company reached a $3 million settlement with Pennsylvania workers who sued after being required to perform COVID screenings while off the clock.
The COVID screenings were mandatory and employees filed a lawsuit claiming workers were not paid for the time it took to take those tests because they took place before clocking in for their shifts.
Employee Bobby Muniz, who works at the Easton fulfillment center, filed the lawsuit saying the screenings took 10-15 minutes before each shift.
Amazon's lawyers argued that "time spent off the clock was minimal," and that screening times sped up once the company implemented the use of thermal cameras to screen employees for fevers.
Amazon employees who worked in Pennsylvania and underwent COVID screening before July 19, 2023 are eligible to be included in the 3-million-dollar class settlement.
No further steps need to be taken.
A hearing to approve the settlement is scheduled for November.
Amazon has not returned KYW Newsradio’s request for comment.
