PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A fire at an apartment building in Kennett Square has displaced at least 54 people.

The Kennett and Longwood fire companies, along with others, were called to South Union Street around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Kennett Fire Company Assistant Chief Rick Franks said firefighters had a lot of work to do when they arrived on the scene.

“The building was partially evacuated. They went inside, they found smoke coming from multiple apartments. They found a fire burning on the second and third floors,” he said.

The fire spread to 12 units before it was extinguished around midnight.

No one was injured.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter for families at Kennett High School.
