PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's another asbestos disruption for a Philly school… Students at Kensington High School are being relocated for the start of the new school year.
When school begins on Aug. 24, more than 400 students and 90 staffers at Kensington High will be relocated because of asbestos concerns.
In a letter to the school community, Deputy Superintendent Oz Hill said crews installing a new heating and air conditioning system at the 110-year-old building stopped their work this summer after an asbestos inspector expressed concerns about the demolition of the old system.
Students will start the year at the vacant Austin Meehan Middle School in Mayfair. Hill said the district considered options closer to Kensington, but none had enough space.
Hill said HVAC work and asbestos removal will resume at Kensington High, and the building should reopen in January.
