SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Five residents and a police officer were injured in a four-alarm fire at a high-rise condo building in Atlantic City, New Jersey, early Wednesday morning.
It happened around 4:30 a.m. at the Brighton Towers on Atlantic Avenue, not far from the Tropicana. The fire started on the eighth or ninth floor.
Atlantic City Fire Chief Scott Evans said the building is well known to the fire department, and any confirmed fire requires a swift, all-hands response.
“From a firefighter perspective, this was a very dangerous, hazardous building with fire located on the eighth, ninth and 10th floors of the corner of the building. There are no sprinklers here. This was a fire that was manpower-intensive,” he said.
All five residents sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The police officer suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital.
Displaced residents were taken to temporary shelter locations. Evans said at least a dozen apartments are not safe to return to.
Brighton Towers has a tragic history of fire. In 1969, a fire there killed four people and injured more than two dozen others.
