PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Ninety-five tons of baby formula landed at Philadelphia International Airport Tuesday as part of Operation Fly Formula, a U.S. initiative intended to curb the baby formula shortage.

It will be available at Target, Walmart and other stores in the next few days.

“Each flight has just a bit less than 2 million 8-ounce servings,” said Bubs Australia CEO Richard Paine, “so every bit counts.”

A UPS official at the airport said UPS delivers more than 25 million packages a day around the world, and this formula shipment is “among the most critical that we will deliver.”

By the end of the week, Operation Fly Formula will have flown more than 43 million 8-ounce bottles of formula into the U.S., according to the White House.

Federal regulators also reached an agreement with Abbott on the steps necessary to re-open the biggest formula plant in the country, located in Sturgis, Michigan. No deadline has been set.
