PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One person was killed and five others were hurt in a serious boating accident near Long Beach Township. One is in critical condition.
The boat struck a channel marker in Barnegat Bay around 5:45 p.m. on Monday. New Jersey State Police told our partners at NBC10 that Gunnar Pearson, 28, died from his injuries after he and one other person were thrown into the water. The second victim is in critical condition, while four others suffered minor injuries.
A man who heard the crash told NBC10 that the people who were still on the boat managed to rescue the pair who had been thrown overboard, but it took them about 15 minutes to do it.
The damaged boat was taken to a marina near Brant Beach.
The crash is under investigation. Officials say no other boats were involved, and they don't yet know what caused it.
