PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Barnes Foundation has invited Philadelphia’s young artists and professionals to the museum to network with one another — on a night that’s “All About Love.”
The museum holds its latest Young Professionals Night on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. Ciara Sullivan, public programs coordinator for the Barnes Foundation, says it’s a chance for Philly’s professional community to mix and mingle with emerging creatives at the center of the city’s vibrant culture scene.
“This event really allows them to come in and make this space their own,” said Sullivan, who adds it also offers an opportunity for guests to check out the museum’s new exhibit — and the evening’s theme — “Mickalene Thomas: All About Love.”
“We really appreciate this opportunity with the Mickalene Thomas exhibition to bring in people who are interested in her work and her community work as well,” said Sullivan.
Thomas, a Camden native, is known for her vibrant depictions of love and community.
“She has roots in the area, she’s from the area,” Sullivan said, “and throughout her whole run we’ve been able to connect with community organizations that are excited about the work she’s doing.”
The Thomas exhibit and Young Professionals event, Sullivan explains, are prime examples of how the Barnes reaches out to local communities, connecting them and offering opportunities to help one another.
“We definitely see that with the partners and organizations that we work with,” she said. “For example we work with The Wardrobe, so people are encouraged to bring things to donate, especially fall and winter clothing this time of year.”
Guests are encouraged to take inspiration from Thomas’ art and dress in ‘70s and ‘80s-styled outfits. There will be a DJ all night, as well as artists from their Barnes West program creating art in real time and tarot card readings in the galleries.
