ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Atlantic City officials are urging residents and visitors to take Tropical Storm Elsa very seriously, as strong winds, heavy rain and rip currents are among the concerns, along with flooding, power outages and dangerous swimming conditions.
“Please make sure that your yard furniture, your deck furniture, your awnings...please make sure that (they are) secure," said Atlantic City Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator Scott Evans.
He said to watch for the speed of the storm as well.
"If this storm slows down, it will increase the flooding in the back bay," Evans warned.
"It is very important to keep track of the storm, how fast it moves, whether it slows down.”
He also shared that the storm could erode parts of the coastline.
“Beach erosion we are anticipating seeing, possibly minor beach erosion depending on the exact speed of the storm," he said.
Officials warned that vehicles parked in low-lying areas should moved to higher ground.
Evans also strongly encouraged people to be careful of rip currents throughout the weekend.
“Please be very cautious," he warned. "Follow the instructions of lifeguards if you are going to the beach.”
