BENSALEM TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Bensalem Township is stepping up police patrols in a unique way, with a program that partners police with the public — and their pets, in an effort to keep everyone safe.
"Paws on Patrol" is a new initiative that asks residents walking their dogs to keep their eyes and ears open for anything unusual.
"Everybody walks their dog, if you have a dog. People are out there socializing while walking their dog," said Bensalem Township Police Department Director Fred Harran.
"And who best knows their community than people in the community? People walking the same route every day. All of a sudden, there is something different. You see different people going into someone's house. You see a truck or car that doesn't belong. Not to take any action. You have done your part. Now you call the police and let us check it out."
Harran said the residents who signed up will be trained via Zoom at the end of May or early June, which he noted is perfect timing now that the weather is improving.
"This is just one more tool in the toolbox. It's a true community policing initiative, because as we have learned over the years, law enforcement alone can not make a community safe," he said.
"Especially with all the things that have transpired in the last 12 months in this country," he added. To use the public and get them on board to be our eyes and ears. Traditionally we had Town Watch. In the words of Emeril Lagasse, 'we are kicking it up a notch.'"
And those participating will be sporting some new attire.
"People like police swagger. And dogs like swagger. And people like dogs in swagger, so we are giving out tee shirts and some items for the canines," said Harran.
Harran believes police working with the community is the best way to protect it.
"We just want to be able to work with our community," he said. "Bensalem residents are the best. Instead of just having two feet on the ground, we are having six feet. Two feet and four paws."
