PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are investigating a hit-and-run in Northeast Philadelphia that left a bicyclist dead.

It happened shortly after 4 a.m. Friday at Woodhaven and Byberry roads, just past the Route 63 exit for Academy Road.

The victim, identified as 16-year-old William McWilliams, was on a mountain bike crossing the intersection when he was hit by a car, according to police. The driver fled.

The impact was so strong that McWilliams was knocked out of his sandals.

“The location where the sandals are and where medics found his body is a distance of about 200 feet,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

McWilliams was taken to the hospital, where he died.

A lot of debris was left behind from the crash, including a Dodge emblem. Police believe that is the make of the car that was involved.

There were no surveillance cameras at the intersection, but police are looking for footage from the surrounding area.
