PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Grab your helmet and get ready to ride!
In partnership with the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia will be hosting a Bike Party on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Falls Bridge on MLK Drive, which is closed every weekend to increase recreational access for the public.
Sonia Bontrager with the coalition says the day is all about fellowship, recreation and enjoying the outdoors.
“We just want to get people out to meet other cyclists. We want to meet cyclists. We want to meet everybody who uses the space, and we want to be able to facilitate connections between different groups,” Bontrager said, adding they want to remind people of the stress-relieving benefits of bike riding.
“When you ride a bike, it clears your mind, it can clear your lungs, and, yeah, riding your bike is way greener. It helps you feel a lot better.”
If you don’t know how to ride, lessons will be available, and if you ride but don’t have a bike, no worries, you can grab an Indigo bike or rent one along Kelly Drive and Boathouse Row. Bontrager says you can even bring a scooter or “whatever you have that's wheeled.”
Helmets are required. The group rolls off at noon Sunday from Waterworks Drive. They will peddle up to Kelly Drive, across Falls Bridge, onto MLK Drive, and back.
