PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Chester community gathered Saturday night for a balloon release in memory of 9-year-old Ny'Leek Ellison.
The boy died last week from injuries he suffered after a hit-and-run crash last year.
"That's my baby, I thought I had him.I thought I was gonna see my baby walk again," said his mother, Anita Carrington.
Last February, Ny’Leek was getting off a SEPTA bus after school at 9th and Tilghman Streets when a driver struck the child and dragged him up the street before driving off.
The boy was left paralyzed from the neck down. He died from injury complications on Thursday.
Caleb Campbell, 22, was sentenced last month to a maximum of three years for the hit-and-run. Family and friends of Ny’Leek at the rally are hoping the charges get upgraded.
Officials have not commented on whether that will happen.
Ny’Leek’s funeral will be held next month.
