Boyertown school bus driver charged with driving kids under the influence turns self in

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A school bus driver in Boyertown who was charged with driving under the influence last month has turned herself in.

It was around 4 p.m. on Feb. 6 when police pulled over 46-year-old school bus driver Kelly Weber along Second Avenue and Gilbert Road.

Police had received reports of the bus moving erratically, almost hitting several cars and a telephone pole.

After searching Weber and the bus, officers found three open bottles of vodka. Blood testing showed Weber was nearly four times over the legal limit. Investigators said 54 children were on the bus driven by Weber that day — five of them under the age of 6.

Officials said she immediately checked herself into rehab and was placed on unpaid leave.

She was charged with driving under the influence, 54 counts of endangering the welfare of children, 54 counts of reckless endangerment, and several summary charges.

She turned herself in on March 27, following treatment. Bail is set at $50,000, under the conditions of no driving, no unsupervised contact with kids and she must comply with recommended treatment.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 7.

According to Quigley Bus Service, Weber passed rigorous background checks before employment, including drug and alcohol testing, criminal screenings, and motor vehicle records reviews.

Quigley said the company will randomly test drivers for drugs and alcohol more frequently.
