PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Northeast Philadelphia-based Congressman Brendan Boyle introduced a bill on Tuesday that would put the brakes on the federal gas tax when prices rise above $4 a gallon.
Speaking in front of a Mayfair Mobil station selling gas for $4.11 a gallon, Boyle said his bill would suspend the 18.4-cents-per-gallon federal gasoline tax when the national average rises above $4 a gallon. The Democrat said it would help drivers manage while the conflict with Iran goes on.
“We cannot wait for this war to end to deliver relief to the American people,” he said. “Let’s do it now and pass my legislation.”
Boyle said highway funds generated by the federal tax would be replaced by cutting subsidies to oil and gas companies. He hopes it’s an idea his Republican colleagues will get behind.
“Here is a tax cut that is fully paid for and can deliver relief for the middle class and working people in this country,” he said. “I am hopeful that you will see some Republicans join my effort, especially those, candidly, who are in more difficult seats.”
There is already a bill that would suspend the federal gas tax until Oct. 1, but Boyle believes his legislation has a better chance of passing.
