PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Broad Street Love, formerly Broad Street Ministries, and Love City Brewing have teamed up to create a new beer.
Guests who stopped by Love City’s brewery on Hamilton Street in Callowhill Friday could try a 10-ounce pour of “Love Your Neighbor” pale ale if they donated an unopened pair of socks or underwear for Broad Street Love’s free clothing boutique.
“This is a really natural partnership to help raise awareness behind why we all need a little more love in our lives and how others can start to love their neighbor in the way that we do at Broad Street Love through this lens of radical hospitality,” said Kathy Meck, chief advancement officer at Broad Street Love, “which means going above and beyond what people expect.”
Larry Downey, director of development for Broad Street Love, says one of their passion points of the collaboration is the beer’s tagline.
“That plays into a lot of things when we're thinking about people impacted by deep poverty and homelessness and how we can show up for those individuals in our community that are going through and are impacted by the trauma of all of those things,” Downey said. "And so the call line is turn this beer into love."
The beer can is essentially decorated with the Broad Street Love logo, which, as Downey explained, is a heart made out of three diamonds. The bottom diamond is a QR code that can be scanned and takes the drinker to a landing page. There, people can donate to the nonprofit and help those experiencing homelessness. The link also shows how to get involved and volunteer.
Melissa Walter, the co-owner of Love City Brewing, says the beer will be available at select locations for a limited time — until it sells out, which she hopes happens quickly.
Downey hopes the collaboration can shine a light on Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week in November.
