PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two brothers from Guatemala were detained when federal agents swept their Camden neighborhood Monday, and now a Haddonfield restaurant where they worked is trying to help.
The brother of the two men told KYW Newsradio, through a translator, that a friend of his witnessed the detainment and told him.
“He saw it happen,” said the translator, a colleague at El Nopalito in Haddonfield. “and that's when he told him, ‘Hey, they just grabbed your brothers, and then he also saw a video on Facebook of them being taken.’”
The two men worked as cooks at El Nopalito. The restaurant has attempted to help the brothers while they are held at Delancey Hall Detention Facility in Newark.
“There's no jobs there. He just came for a better living, to help out his family back home. He has five kids,” said his colleague.
The brother asked to remain anonymous. “Since Trump came into office, it's just like a constant fear that they live like you know like it's not the same as it used to. It's just fear that they feel stepping out their house, going anywhere,” he said through the translator.
“They just said, ‘We're being treated like if we were criminals, which we're not. The conditions aren't well in here,’” said the brother. “We want to fight, and they they also want to fight and they want to stay here and to keep working.”
KYW Newsradio asked ICE about enforcement efforts in Camden, but has not received a response.
