EDGEWATER PARK, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Rain was falling again in South Jersey on Wednesday, just hours after crews worked to assist people affected by flooding in neighborhoods along the Delaware River. Officials are asking people to avoid driving Wednesday night if possible.
In Burlington County, 77 vehicles were rescued from rising water at the peak of the flooding. County emergency management officials say they received more than 600 calls to 911 Tuesday night. Parts of Delran and Cinnaminson received at least 6 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service.
The relentless rain flooded out a section of the Silver Park West Estates, a 55-and-older community just off Burlington Pike.
In Edgewater Park, 15 homes were evacuated. Resident Ed Kwaitkowski said he’ll never forget it.
“I’ve never heard rain come down that hard in my life. It was pretty bad,” he said.
“This is devastating. People definitely got water into their house.”
With more rain falling on top of that, officials say, it’s best if people stay home if they can. Cinnaminson police officer William Obuchowski says a combination of high tides, heavy rain and clogged drains created the flood conditions, and they don’t anticipate any additional flooding.
Workers have since cleared those storm drains using a large industrial pump.
There were reports of flooding in other parts of South Jersey and in Lower Bucks County. The storms also affected travel at Philadelphia International Airport, where dozens of flights were canceled and delayed.
Fortunately no injuries were reported, but residents aren’t out of the woods yet, as more rain was in the forecast. Officials are encouraging people to prepare a disaster kit for their family with essential supplies that can be grabbed quickly in an emergency evacuation.
