SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Burlington County is commissioning a study to find solutions that improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Covering about 820 square miles, Burlington County is the largest county in the state. Between 2021 and 2025, the county recorded 45 pedestrian and cyclist deaths.
County Commissioner Allison Eckel said officials are working on a comprehensive study to bring that number down to zero — a huge challenge in a county of this size — and they want to hear from the people who know the area best.
“The public knows their routes the best; they see what goes on every day on their particular roads around the county,” Eckel said.
“We will be asking the public’s input in an online survey as well as some public conversations that we’re going to be promoting in the coming weeks.”
One of the best ways to avoid accidents, Eckel noted, is to keep people from walking or biking along busy streets to begin with, so one of the core components of the study will be looking into where and how to expand the county’s connected trail network.
