CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Residents and businesses in Camden have been cleaning up after heavy rain on Monday caused severe flooding.
Parts of Haddon Avenue in the Parkside neighborhood were a complete mess, with some small ponds remaining after the road turned into a river.
Daniel Duran, who owns JYM Supermarket, said his store took on several feet of water in the basement.
“When the flood was going through, it was a little stressful. We were getting a lot of water coming into the basement, through windows, through cracks in the wall, through the door,” he said.
“A lot of the product was overflowing and just spoiled. A lot of the motors for the refrigerators are getting messed up.”
Duran expects the price tag will be about $50,000 for his store. He said the situation has been really stressful, but he’s trying to stay positive.
“The community is continuously coming in, shopping and they’re giving us good vibes, good energy,” he said, “and we have a good team here of guys here who are cleaning and working at the same time.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill visited Camden Fire Headquarters and said the city’s sewer management helped mitigate the damage.
“Even though it was historic levels of flooding, you saw the flooding go down very quickly because of those well-maintained sewers after the event was over,” she said, adding that residents affected by flooding should report through the state’s Office of Emergency Management.
“Some of the applications we’ll have for federal assistance will be very technical so we want everyone to report those damages so we can calculate them.”
