CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — It’s not a bus. It’s not Uber or Lyft. It’s Camden Loop — a new ride-hailing service that’s helping fill the gaps left by buses and other forms of mass transit.
Here’s how it works:
Camden Loop will take residents and visitors just about anywhere they want to go in the city — work, the grocery store, the doctor — plus a few destinations outside the city, like ShopRite, for $2 a ride, plus $1 for each additional passenger.
Download the Camden Loop mobile app (available for iOS and Android). Then, with a quick request on the app, or a call to the Camden Loop hotline, residents and visitors can get a minivan to come pick them up — either right where they are or at an intersection nearby.
The service runs from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. A free trial period runs through July 17.
“Having this transportation opportunity is a major game changer in our city,” Mayor Vic Carstarphen said.
He says it will help get people to and from work and enhance the city’s economy. Camden Loop is more than just a ride-hailing service, he said: “It is a commitment to building a strong workforce and providing that workforce with the tools they need to succeed.”
Loop Drivers earn $20 an hour. Cecelia Goldsboro has been driving for a couple of weeks and says passengers love it.
“They’re happy that they don’t have to stand outside in the heat or the cold. They say they’re going to use it everyday.”
Goldsboro has also taken trips as a passenger.
“They come when they tell you. There’s a timer on there to let you know when to be at the stop or where to go to, so I think it’s really good,” she said.
