SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Camden County is holding a gun buyback event Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church on Ferry Avenue in Camden from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Acting Camden County Prosecutor Jill Mayer says cash will be paid for weapons, no questions asked.

Mayer acknowledges that criminals are unlikely to participate in this kind of event, but she says gun buybacks do produce results.

"We know all too well that guns often fall into the wrong hands. They are stolen from people’s residences. Children get a hold of them, and tragedy happens. We’ve seen it firsthand," she said. "So I applaud the attorney general for his efforts in this regard, and I think it will go a long way to making our cities safer."

Two South Jersey hospital systems where gunshot victims are treated, Cooper University Health Care and Virtua Health System, are ponying up a portion of the cash for the buyback event.
