Camden delays return to classrooms over concern for COVID-19 spring break spread

SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Students in Camden are going to have to wait an extra week before returning to the classroom.

Instead of going back next week, in-person learning will begin on April 19.

Camden City School District Superintendent Katrina McCombs said increased COVID-19 numbers over the past few weeks led her to this difficult decision.

She said staff who traveled over spring break may need to quarantine, which could leave the district understaffed in schools.

"One thing that we have learned throughout this pandemic is to be consistently flexible and ready to adjust any well-intentioned plans and decisions," she said in a statement.

Although federal and state health agencies say schools can operate hybrid learning during "high ranges," McCombs said district officials want to "reduce risks with any additional spring break exposure."

Students will continue remote learning for the week of April 12.
