CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — The Camden City School District held the first of two vaccination events Thursday to get shots into the arms of students and staff ahead of the upcoming school year.
Students and their families were invited to get their vaccines at Thomas H. Dudley Family School, complete with music, free soft pretzels and plenty of health care information from a bunch of organizations.
Acting Superintendent Katrina McCombs said the events emphasize the importance of being prepared for the return to classrooms.
"We know that the more students and residents who are vaccinated, the lower the likelihood that there will be spread of any of the variants," she said.
It was a family affair for Consuela Ortiz, who brought her nephew and her son, Angel, to get their shots.
Angel showed off his bandage and said he feels great.
"When I got the vaccine, I thought it was gonna hurt, but actually it didn't and I feel a lot safer because, for me, it's going to be a lower chance of getting COVID now," he said.
McCombs said people from the neighborhood are also welcome to get their shots for free. Another event will soon be set up for everyone to get a second dose.
Free shuttle service is also available throughout Camden from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
