PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Statewide car crashes over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend increased by nearly 10% compared to last year, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Between Nov. 27 and Dec. 1, State Police investigated 1,075 car crashes — up from 979 in 2023.
Of the 1,075 crashes, there were seven deaths — three more deaths than in 2023. Officials said impaired driving was a factor in 64 crashes, one of which was fatal.
The greater Philadelphia area, including Philly, Montgomery and Delaware counties, had the most crashes — 151 — of any other troop jurisdiction, and there were six DUI-related crashes. No one was killed in this region.
During the five-day holiday period, troopers arrested 552 people across the state for driving under the influence — up by 10 from last year. They also issued 7,770 citations for speeding, 1,020 for failing to wear a seat belt, and 124 for not securing children in safety seats.
