LINDENWOLD, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — An SUV driver went off the road and hit a group of teenagers walking on the sidewalk in Lindenwold, Camden County, on Tuesday. One of the teens became trapped under the car.
It happened after school let out, around 2 p.m., on East Gibbsboro Road, near Lange Boulevard.
Police said the SUV hit six high schoolers and knocked down part of a chain-link fence. The victims were between 14 and 16 years old, according to Lindenwold police.
One of them became trapped under the SUV.
“I heard a voice saying ‘help,’ but it was a little faint. And then I went outside of the fence and I saw the kid under the front bumper,” said Dennis Woodley, who told reporters that he heard the crash. He and his coworker ran over to try to help.
Crews were able to lift the vehicle and free the seriously injured teen, who was flown to the hospital for treatment. The five other teens were not as seriously hurt, though police did not release the full extent of their injuries.
Woodley said the driver tried to leave the scene.
“We pulled him out of the car,” he said. “I restrained him. I put him in a full nelson. I said, ‘You’re under a citizen’s arrest.’ I said, ‘You’re not leaving until the police get here.’”
Police detained two people who were in the SUV.
Charges have not been filed, as police continue their investigation into the circumstances and cause of the crash.
