PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — U.S. park officials are investigating an arson last weekend in the basement of a historic Old City building.

Around 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve, authorities said a park ranger passed by Carpenters’ Hall on Chestnut Street, between Third and Fourth streets, and noticed a fire engulfing the basement.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, and the fire is being investigated as arson.

Authorities are asking anyone who was in that area on Christmas Eve to provide any information they may have about the fire or if they observed any suspicious activity.

People can call or text a tip to 888-653-0009 or email nps_isb@nps.gov. Tips can also be submitted online.

Carpenters’ Hall is a part of the Independence National Historical Park, as it hosted the first Continental Congress in 1774 and was home to the first and second U.S. banks.

It has been closed to the public since April for preservation efforts.
