PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A North Philadelphia deli cashier is in critical condition after police say a customer walked in, waited in line and opened fire.
Around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said the 34-year-old was shot at least four times throughout his body while in the cashier's booth of a deli, located at 26th Street and West Lehigh Avenue.
Detectives believe this was a targeted shooting and not a robbery.
"Right now we don't have a motive," said Chief Inspector Scott Small, "but it appears that this shooter walked in, stood in line, then pulled a gun, fired shots at the store clerk, then fled the scene."
About 10 people were inside at the time, and the shooter ran from the scene. Witnesses told police the shooter is a regular customer.
"The shooter is known to come into this location on a regular basis, almost every day," Small added.
He said the entire shooting was caught on surveillance video, so detectives are confident they will be able to track the suspect down.
This is just one of the latest examples of gun violence in Philadelphia, and it may be affecting the city's reputation. A recent Gallup poll found that 50% of people who aren't from Philadelphia view it as a dangerous place to live and visit.
