'See what the kids know': Chestnut Hill library hosts sci-fi trivia series

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Chestnut Hill Public Library, part of the Free Library of Philadelphia, has called on sci-fi fans from toddlers to teenagers to use their force and boldly go where no trivia player has gone before.

The library staff has challenged kids around Chestnut Hill to a science fiction trivia series this summer.

They are engaging plenty of Star Wars fans like Devon, 4, and his mother.

"Star Wars! I love Star Wars!" said Devon, 4, and his mother.

In some cases, they're reaching kids like Jahaim, 16, who just loves space in general.

"I like the moon, aliens, but you see different stuff," he said.

Derrek McLean is the resident Star Trek expert and security guard. He said the program is all about sharing the love of science fiction with a new generation.

"Fun and learning," McLean said. "Find out, while I'm engaging with them, their knowledge about the Star Trek world."

The trivia series covers everything from Star Trek and Star Wars to comic books, including DC and Marvel.

Library staff member Jarrell Smith has been looking forward to shaking off the pandemic blues with the kids.

"The coolest part about it is to get to see what the kids know," said Smith.

"Pre-COVID, the kids were here, and they would check out the science fiction section and the comic book section."

The sci-fi series at the Chestnut Hill Public Library runs through the end of August. Click here for more information.
