Investigation underway after child walks out of Montco day care alone

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An investigation is underway after a child was found wandering alone outside a day care in Montgomery County last week.

It happened on Friday at the KinderCare in East Norriton. A spokesperson for the day care said a child was able to leave the center unattended.

The teacher involved has been placed on administrative leave. Another teacher safely returned the child to the center.

East Norriton Township police said they weren’t called on Friday about this incident.

Dennis McAndrews, a former prosecutor and education law expert, said the state would likely take the lead in a case like this.

“I would expect the Department of Human Services to use their own investigators to go and evaluate the situation — why it happened, how long it was occurring, what the level of danger was to the child,” he told NBC10.

According to public records, the facility has a four-star rating and has not had any previous reported incidents like this.

KinderCare said it is using this incident as an opportunity to retrain all staff on safety and security.
