PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Chipotle Mexican Grill has agreed to a $7.75 million agreement with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office to settle child labor violations.
Acting Attorney General Matt Platkin said there were more than 30,000 alleged violations against the popular chain.
He said many of those claims were for failure to abide by limits on the hours minors can work, and there were complaints from minor employees who said they weren’t given adequate breaks to eat.
New Jersey has specific limits on child work hours, depending on their age and if they have school that day.
“After-school and summer employment can be of tremendous value to both the young worker and the employer, but these jobs cannot come at the expense of treating employees fairly,” said New Jersey Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo.
Chipotle, which has 85 locations in New Jersey, agreed to comply with a long-term labor strategy as part of the settlement.
