PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Come Valentine's Day, a city official is hoping to give engaged couples a "selfie" moment to make the formality of picking up a marriage license a little more special.
Register of Wills Tracey L. Gordon says Room 415 in City Hall, where Philadelphia couples go to get their marriage license, is getting a new mural.
"Any given day in Philadelphia, around City Hall you will see newlyweds," says Register of Wills Tracey L. Gordon.
Love persists, even in a pandemic. Gordon says she has issued hundreds of marriage licenses a month in the last year.
"And one thing I noticed was people always wanted to take a picture after they get their marriage license," she said. "There's a spot near the door where everyone poses to get their photos to show, 'Hey, we were here! We did it!'"
Gordon says she had her colleagues thought: "Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have a mural where couples could come and they could take a memorable shot?"
So the city partnered with Mural Arts Philadelphia and artist Nathaniel Lee to add some "Instagrammable" art to the room.
"When they come here for the business of getting married, at least they can leave with a moment in history that they can share," Gordon said.
Lee has been working on the mural from his studio, using special materials. The mural will depict some of the city's iconic landmarks, with a special spot for couples to stand to complete the image.
"There are lots of little details that say, 'Hey, this is us. This is Philly,'" Lee said.
His goal is to finish the wall by Feb. 14.
"I am going to be painting like crazy between now and Valentine's Day!"
