PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Looking for a summer gig? Recruitment efforts are underway for Philly lifeguards.

The City of Philadelphia wants to be able to open 60 of its outdoor pools this summer, which would call for about 420 lifeguards, according to Parks and Recreation Commissioner Susan Slawson.

She says if they don’t reach that amount, pools in the city will have to limit days of operation.

Lifeguards work about 35 hours per week from June through August. Free training takes place throughout the year.

Pay starts at $16 an hour, with potential to earn up to $18. And, there’s an end-of-season bonus of $1,000 for those who submit their application before April 15. If you miss that deadline, there’s a chance to get a $500 bonus if you apply by May 15.

"We need the lifeguards. We need our college students who are coming home. We need people that live in the city who are just looking to provide life saving opportunities for our young people,” Slawson said. "We're willing to make sure that community members have this opportunity. We just need to have the staff to do it."
