PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The first woman to lead an Ivy League university, Claire Fagin, has died.
Fagin was the interim president of the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 and 1994, between Sheldon Hackney and Judith Rodin. She also served as dean of Penn’s School of Nursing.
The school’s Fagin Hall is named for her. There is also a chair, an award and a scholarship there in her name.
Penn’s current interim president, Larry Jameson, said in a statement that she was “admired, respected and revered by all who knew her.”
Fagin was 97. She is survived by her son Charles. Another son died of COVID-19 in 2020, and her husband died in 2019.
