PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A congressional report that accuses the School District of Philadelphia of fostering antisemitism is getting pushback from district officials.
The report, released this week by the House Committee on Education and Workforce, claims the district’s teachers and curricula justify “violent resistance and legitimize radical groups that incite antisemitism,” and train students to be “far-left activists” as early as second grade.
During questioning by the committee in September, Superintendent Dr. Tony Watlington was asked about what is appropriate in the social studies curriculum. He said educators teach complex, controversial issues, including American, Israeli and Palestinian history, to inform as they teach students how to think, not what to think.
In a statement, spokesperson Monique Braxton said the district takes antisemitism concerns seriously and does not condone or tolerate racism or discrimination against any ethnic group.
Braxton also noted the report from the Republican-led committee comes two weeks before the midterm elections.
