US Rep. Boyle challenges White House’s proposed changes to mail-in voting

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle is fighting back against the Trump administration’s efforts to diminish voting by mail.

Appearing beside members of the postal workers union and city commissioners at the Grant Shopping Plaza in the Northeast on Tuesday, the Philadelphia Democratic congressman said he’s focused on ensuring free and fair elections this November.

“I am sending an oversight letter today to the postmaster general of the United States, demanding answers about this new system and what it could mean for Philadelphia,” he said.

This comes after the Justice Department appealed to the Supreme Court to lift a lower court’s ban on proposed mail-in voting restrictions.

Boyle is the cosponsor of a U.S. House bill aimed at stopping changes to mail ballots. However, with the current makeup of the House, he acknowledged it is unlikely to move forward.

“A president should not be able to rewrite the rules of the game and the rules of our election by executive order simply because he does not like how Americans choose to vote,” Boyle argued. “This legislation would stop once and for all President Trump’s executive order from taking effect and prevent federal resources from being used to carry it out.”
