NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Congressman Jeff Van Drew is asking New Jersey’s Turnpike Authority to reconsider a contract signed with a firm he says has ties to China.

Van Drew says it’s unacceptable the New Jersey Turnpike Authority Board of Commissioners voted to approve a $1.7 billion contract for E-ZPass services to TransCore, a Nashville firm owned by another company in Singapore, for, he says, leadership there traces back to the Chinese Communist Party.

"This is a direct threat to both our national security and the privacy of millions of Americans,” Van Drew said. “The CCP has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to exploit foreign partnerships to advance its own strategic interests, often at the expense of U.S. security.”

Van Drew says it is reckless and unnecessary to hand over critical infrastructure operations to a foreign company when American companies are fully capable.

KYW Newsradio reached out to the Turnpike Authority but has not heard back.
