PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Drivers will have to find a new way to get to work and school if their commute takes them over the Market Street Bridge.
Market Street is now closed in both directions from Schuylkill Avenue, right in front of 30th Street Station, to 22nd Street, and it will stay closed for more than a year.
The project is expected to continue through October 2027.
Crews are replacing the deteriorated bridge decks and sidewalks, reconfiguring some traffic patterns, and adding bike lanes.
About 11,000 vehicles use the bridge every day. Drivers and bicyclists are being detoured to the one-way bridges on Walnut and Chestnut streets. Pedestrian access is available on one side of the bridge during the work.
Work to rehabilitate the Market Street Bridge over the Schuylkill River was on pause for the semiquincentennial and the World Cup games this summer, but work resumed on July 20.
PennDOT spokesperson Brad Rudolph said the $149 million project is necessary to rebuild the 94-year-old span.
He said this work will also require full closures of the eastbound Schuylkill Expressway for five weekends, starting this fall.
