PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Atrial fibrillation (A-fib) is a heart rhythm disturbance that can affect as many as 5 million adults in this country. Numerous studies are being done looking at newer and more effective treatments and ways to make the diagnosis.

In a major medical update, scientists looked at the value of screening adults for A-fib with electrocardiograms (EKG) and continuous heart monitors. They concluded that smartphones and smartwatches have similar accuracy.

Doctors can instruct patients to take advantage of the technology — especially if they are wearing it on their wrists.
