KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Universal Health Services, a major hospital system based in King of Prussia, is the victim of a massive cyber attack.

Universal, which has its corporate offices on Gulph Road, said in a statement that its network is down because of an “IT security issue.”

The company did not go into further detail about what exactly happened. NBC News, citing a source, reports this incident appears to be caused by ransomware.

The outages started over the weekend. The company says facilities are relying on back-up processes and offline documentation as they try to fix the problem. The company says patient care is being delivered “safely and effectively,” and patient and employee information doesn’t appear to have been “accessed, copied or misused.”

Universal has 400 facilities in the United States and the United Kingdom. The company owns eight facilities in the Philadelphia area.

• Fairmount Behavioral Health in Philadelphia
• Friends Hospital in Philadelphia
• Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital in Fort Washington
• The Horsham Clinic in Ambler
• Foundations Behavioral Health in Doylestown
• KeyStone Center in Brookhaven
• Hampton Behavior Health Center in Westhampton, N.J.
• Rockford Center in Newark, Del.

The company, over the summer, reached a $117 million settlement with the U.S. Justice Department over false claims made to government programs including Medicare and Medicaid.
