PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Pennsylvania State Police say they learned Thursday that escaped murderer Danilo Cavalcante was spotted on a trail camera Wednesday night.
The feed was not live, so it was 24 hours old when State Police got it Thursday evening, just hours after another reported sighting near Longwood Gardens, which led to early closure of the garden, as well as a shelter-in-place as police searched the property.
KYW Suburban Bureau Chief Jim Melwert took a tour of the command post overseeing the search for Cavalcante, where State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens says they “can run all the operations.”
“What you see up here is a screen that depicts the perimeter and it's updated real-time — all of those cars are actual State Police cars that are out there and involved in the perimeter.”
All of the about 100 police cars on the screen are labeled, so they can move units as needed.
“This gives you some idea of that when I say that we have to bring a lot of people in,” Bivens said. “There are a lot of people that it takes to secure a perimeter like that. And that's every shift.”
There are also live feeds from aerial support and communications.
From the aerial feeds, Bivens says they have the ability to use thermal and infrared technology and can display the views to those in the command post.
Bivens says he remains confident Cavalcante is contained within the search area, and while they search they want to make sure they keep him within that perimeter.
Bivens added that deadly force is authorized, which means Cavalcante can be shot if he tries to run, or if he does anything other than actively surrender.
“We've typically gotten them to surrender, so it's our goal. But if that's not what he chooses to do, we can't have this game, per se — this deadly game — go on forever.”
The reward for information leading to Cavalcante’s capture remains at $20,000. Anyone with information to aid in the search is encouraged to call a tip line at 717-562-2987.
