PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One person was killed and nearly a dozen others were injured after a fire broke out in a row home in the Nicetown section of North Philadelphia Wednesday morning.
It happened around 2 a.m. on Dennie Street, close to where the Roosevelt Boulevard Expressway crosses Germantown Avenue.
When first responders arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. The fire was heaviest on the first floor of the three-story, middle-row property.
Fire officials said about a dozen people were in the home when the fire broke out. One woman had jumped from a rear window. Firefighters found her with serious injuries, and she was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Firefighters also found a male victim, believed to be in his 60s, dead on the first floor.
Neighbors at an adjacent row home helped several of them escape. A woman banged on the neighbor's third-floor bedroom window, and he helped her and her infant through. Two men and several other children, all under the age of 13, were then rescued through that window.
At least eight people were taken to the hospital, two critically. Fire officials reported a possible 13th victim who was transported to the hospital by police, though they are not yet sure if that person was inside at the time of the fire.
Firefighters said they didn't hear any smoke alarms going off when they arrived.
