PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia man was killed and another man was injured during a shooting in Dover following Delaware State University’s homecoming festivities. The school said the victims were not students.

Dover police said thousands of students and visitors at Delaware State University were required to leave the homecoming events on campus at 6 p.m. Saturday. That led to large crowds gathering at nearby shopping centers and similar locations.

Around 9:15 p.m., police said shots were fired at the parking lot of Dover Commons shopping center on North Dupont Highway, close to the campus.

There, officers found 22-year-old Nassir Cox, of Philadelphia, and an unidentified 21-year-old man, both suffering from gunshot wounds.

Due to gridlocked traffic, police decided to transport the two victims to Bayhealth Kent Campus in police vehicles, rather than wait for emergency medical personnel to arrive.

Cox died from his injuries. The 21-year-old is stable in the hospital.

The university said in a statement that no students, faculty members, staff members, or visiting alumni were injured.

Officials said the dispersal of the crowd from DSU’s homecoming preceded a number of incidents in the surrounding area, including gunshots fired at multiple locations, fights, and disorderly conduct. The rowdiness prompted more than 50 officers from a handful of nearby police departments to patrol the area.
