PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A woman died Tuesday morning after she was pulled from an apartment fire in West Chester.

West Chester firefighters, police officers and other emergency officials responded to reports of a fire in a four-unit apartment building around 5:40 a.m. on the 50 block of Patton Alley, near North High Street, just around the corner from the YMCA.

"The police were met with heavy smoke conditions," West Chester Fire Chief Steve Pelna told NBC10. "They attempted to make entry into the apartment. Unfortunately, they had to pull out."

Pelna said an assistant fire chief eventually made entry into the apartment and found a woman.

"The victim was turned over to EMS. Unfortunately, that victim, when they were transported to the hospital, succumbed to their injuries due to the fire," he said.

The woman has not been identified.

Officials said there were six victims in the fire that left the four apartments in the complex uninhabitable. Outside of the fatality, Pelna said one person was treated for smoke inhalation, along with an EMS worker. One firefighter also sustained an ankle injury.

"During a time of joy and time with your family, this is certainly heartbreaking today," said Pelna.
