MEDIA, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Election night was a big one for Democrats in Delaware County, with a blue wave for some of their most sought-after seats.

Delaware County Democratic candidates ran for judge and County Council seats, sheriff, register of wills and controller.

“We won every single race on the countywide level,” said Salvatore Colleluori, the Democratic countywide campaign manager. Compared to 2023, he said, at the County Council level, Republicans had 1,000 more votes and Democrats had about 24,000 more votes.

Richard Womack will retain his seat on County Council and will be joined by fellow Democrat Joanne Phillips, while District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer is moving on to serve as a judge on the County Court of Common Pleas.

Army veteran and former police officer Saddiq Kamara won his race for sheriff. “Saddiq is one of the youngest, if not the youngest sheriff in America. He’ll bring a fresh perspective and a long history of service to his country and his community,” said Colleluori.

Louis Rosenthal won his race for county controller and Democrat Vincent Rongione retained his position as register of wills.

“Our goal here was to talk to Democrats and explain to them what their county government is doing for them and give them a positive vision for the future, and I think that shows that paid off,” said Colleluori. “People wanted to come out and they wanted to endorse that positive vision.”

Colleluori said that message rang true on hyperlocal levels. “Throughout the county, we’ve had at least 10-15 seats flip, and I think that’s a big endorsement of the Democratic vision,” he reasoned.

Now that campaigning and elections are over, Colleluori said elected county Democrats have a lot to do. “We have to show folks over the next two years that county government is working for them.”
