GLENOLDEN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A female employee was shot Friday at a Walmart in Delaware County.
It was just before 7:30 p.m. when Darby Township Police said two customers got into an argument inside the Walmart on MacDade Boulevard in Glenolden. One of those customers pulled out a gun and opened fire inside the store.
A female employee was shot once in the leg. Police said her injury is not life-threatening.
One customer, Miss Smith, was about to check out when the gunfire started. “All you hear is a pop and everybody's jumping down, you know, going down to the floor,” she described. “From the corner of my right eye, I could see something ricochet to the floor and then it flashed, so I'm assuming that was the bullet.”
She said everyone was moved to the back of the store at one point before evacuating.
“Children [were] screaming, one woman, she was hyperventilating, she was panicking,” Smith recalled. “I went to her side. I was telling her to breathe, you know, take deep breaths in and out so you can be able to think and concentrate.” Police said five to 10 shots rang out during the argument, and the suspect fled the store.
Hannah and her family live nearby and heard the goings-on. “We heard sirens, checked Delco dispatch, saw that a woman got shot here at the Walmart. We heard the helicopter right over our house and then,” she said.
“It's scary because you really never know what's going to happen in Delco.”
Police are still looking for the shooter, who they said wore an orange hoodie and grey sweatpants. The investigation is ongoing, though officials said there is no active threat to the public.
