PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — More Delawareans will be able to get their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine starting this week.
The initial criteria for getting your second shot at the six-day Dover International Speedway Megasite, which opened over the weekend, is your first shot had to come from one of the state-run events last month.
But Delaware Division of Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay said not anymore.
"We think for the most part, people who got their first dose at DMV events in January have already signed up," she explained. "So we want to provide an opportunity for others who have had trouble finding the second dose."
So on Thursday and Friday, anybody who got their first shot in the state on or before Jan. 22 can get their second shot at this site.
"We're really looking for those folks who have had a difficult time finding a place to get their second dose," she added.
Both Rattay and Gov. John Carney stopped by the site this week and liked what they saw.
"When you need your spirits lifted up, just come to an event like this," Carney said. "The people want the vaccine. There's an intensity of it because they recognize that it's lifesaving number one, and number two it's going to help them a little bit get back to normal."
"You're going to make me tear up," an emotional Linda Kopishke told NBC 10 after getting her second shot at the Speedway. "It feels good to be able to think about doing things and seeing children and grandchildren."
Carney said everything at the megasite has been running smoothly and moving fast with next to no wait time, which he calls "a big deal."
"Because it enables us to make good on our second dose commitment to thousands of Delawareans," he said.
On Sunday, when the site opened, 1,500 people got their second shots. That number nearly doubled on Monday, despite bad weather.
Before the week is over, officials estimate around 20,000 second shots will be administered at the "Monster Mile," which is on appointment only. If you don't have an appointment, you won't get a shot.
