PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Delaware County’s Health Department has a new way to reach residents.
On Friday, the department hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its “Wellness on Wheels” Mobile Health Unit.
The 33-foot-long RV is intended to bring health care services, like screenings, vaccines for kids and adults and STI and STD testing, directly into neighborhoods across the county, reaching residents where they live, work or learn.
“...We are trying to promote equity and really bring healthcare to our vulnerable populations,” said Aminata Donzo, the department’s mobile health coordinator.
Department director Lora Werner said this mobile unit is needed in the county now more than ever, after Crozer-Chester and Taylor Francis hospitals shut down last year.
“Making up the difference for some of the losses we’ve had in our county with our healthcare systems collapsing the last year, we want to build up, and this is a way of building up.”
The $310,000 mobile unit is federally funded and expected to make its debut in the community later this month.
