DELAWARE COUNTY (KYW Newsradio) — Summer is officially here.

While a lot of folks can escape the heat by relaxing under the air conditioning, taking a dip in the pool or heading to the shore, for some, that's not an option.

Officials in Delaware County have a plan to help residents beat the heat, and it all starts with a partnership with PECO.

PECO’s Michele Garrity said that’s why they’re donating 100 box fans to the county.

“That will be distributed to senior centers. It’s important for seniors to keep cool throughout the summer, so that they can stay healthy,” she said.

Carin Tinney with the county’s office of services for the aging said they’re encouraging residents over the age of 60 to visit one of their eight senior centers to pick up a free fan.

“We’ve had heat, unbelievably, already throughout the spring. It’s really exciting to actually give out something physically that can help somebody negotiate the heat and keep cool during these days,” Tinney said.

Delaware County council chair Richard Womack said in addition to those fans for seniors, they’ve laid out their 2026 heat plan that offers resources and help for all residents.

“We have our cooling stations around, we have our wellness on wheels from our health department. We will still have our hotlines to call,” he said.

Delaware County seniors aren’t the only ones who will benefit from the fans, PECO is giving out a total of 600 fans to Philadelphia and the surrounding counties.
