DELAWARE COUNTY (KYW Newsradio) — The Delaware County Republican Party is pushing for more seats to be added to the county council.
All five of Delaware County’s Council seats are currently filled by Democrats and that does not sit well with the county’s Republican Party.
Delaware County is the only county in the commonwealth that doesn’t have some sort of minority voice on the council.
Delaware County GOP chairman Frank Agovino said republicans don’t really have a seat at the table.
He said that’s why they’re asking the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to weigh in on their recommendation to add two seats to the council that would be filled by the minority party.
“It’s not anything new. It’s something that’s been talked about back and forth by both parties for quite a long time now,” Agovino said.
Cheryl Grasso, chair of the Delaware County Democratic Committee, reminds our partners at NBC-10 of a stretch in the 2010s when Delaware County republicans held all five council seats.
“The watchdog in the room, in my opinion, is just a way to change the rules, now that they are not in power,” Grasso said.
In 2019, Democrats broke 150 years of uninterrupted republican rule in Delaware County by winning control of both the council and the district attorney’s office.
